"Progressive Seniors Dinner Party"
Ive always enjoyed cooking and entertaining but Ive found the options for single seniors 55+, limited. So this adventure is not a dating meet-up but rather a meet-up over a great meal with terrific conversation too. Join us for our first dinner party in Acton, MA on Sunday, September 19th, 6:00 p.m. Who are we? +55 Progressive Singles Who Love Food! We are limited to 20 progressive single seniors 10 lucky men and 10 lucky women. Our dinner party theme this month is Bistro Cooking Imagine a small village in France and were in a wonderful neighborhood restaurant Bistro cooking has been described as bold and fully flavored Imagine long, slow-cooked stews, exquisitely roasted chickens, creamy gratins topped with crisp crust and vibrant green salads; bright, tangy fruit tarts; and silky smooth custards. Desserts are decadent. Some suggestions Bistro Menu Suggestionsfor dishes you might want to make follow, but make what floats your boat. You can stretch your culinary muscles a little or a lot. Challenge yourself as much as you choose. Or make an old favorite. You dont have to fuss, but do use real ingredients. Simple is fine, too. An example of simple would be a lovely bowl of berries with real heavy cream. Our venue will be cozy and comfortable. The evening will be the same. Twins, Bonds, Zealand, Garfield, you name it - we'll do it! Fall foliage to boot
Come spend Columbus day weekend with us at Galehead hut. Two nights at Galehead positions us for a variety of hikes (read "Peaks") on this 3-day weekend. We did this a few years ago and got crisp dry weather and bluebird skies the whole weekend (see photo i took that weekend - too bad he didn't fall in ;-)! Idea would be to spot cars in a couple of places, to hike up one way (my preference over the Twins) and to hike out another (I suggest Garfield); on Sunday spend the day in the Pemigewasset Wilderness - peak baggers delight! Please make your own reservations at Galehead: http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/summer-guide-2010-hut.cfm Nice way to get the Bonds et al, nice to be treated to dinner and breakfast, lots of people to meet at the hut - only thing missing is on-site massage therapist and sauna (Georgia on my mind....). Details to follow

The Grand Canyon
It goes without saying that the best way to see the staggeringly magnificent landscapes within the canyon is to hike right into them. Descend into the canyon on the South Kaibab trail. The plan for those who have the mandatory permit will be to camp at the Bright Angel Camp Ground. We managed to get the last reservations for the "dormitory" for 6 bunks. phone to see if there are any cancellations- you do not need a permit if you stay at the ranch. The following day there are many trails and much to see..including the wild animals that roam around you with no fear of humans..There is also an option to eat at the Phantom Ranch. I would encourage supper the night before we hike out and Breakfast the morning of (awesome breakfast) It is a long hike out! We will ascend on the Bright Angel Trail. South Kaibab Trail: 7260ft 5-6 hours 7 miles Starts out at a gentle decline before spiraling steeply down. Bright Angel Trail: 6868ft 8-9 hours 9.3 miles This trip will require a $100.00 dollar deposit (non-refundable unless the trip is canceled on our behalf) This deposit will go towards a permit needed to hike and spend two nights at the bottom of the canyon also to secure a motel room for Wednesday evening. We will be staying at the Best Western right out side the park entrance of the South Rim. There are two choices sleeping at the bottom of the canyon. Last December I spent one night at Bright Angel Campground and one night at Phantom ranch. The campsites are well kept and have water and bathrooms, Phantom ranch has cabins and bunk houses these are extremely hard to get into and need to be booked almost a year in advance. Some of us already have reservation. If you are serious about this adventure you can call Phantom Ranch every other week to check on cancellations. If you can't get into the ranch a tent site is your only option. There is no snow at the bottom of the canyon!! You will be responsible for your airfare, transportation, meals, hotel stays (one evening before the hike and the evening on Sunday after your hike out. You will also be responsible for your meals in the canyon. I highly recommend calling Phantom Ranch and reserve breakfast and dinner they also have sack lunches otherwise you will have to carry your food in. Most of us will be flying into phoenix AZ, however, your other choices are Flagstaff, or Las Vegas. If you choose to fly into Las Vegas keep in mind that there is alot of construction going on at the Hoover Dam and traffic is a problem. We have an option of communicating so we all get on the same flight and sharing in the cost of a rental car. What ever the choice for sure is meeting at the Best Western for 6:00am on Thursday the morning of the hike. Please e-mail with any questions or concerns As a condition of your voluntary participation in this activity you acknowledge and agree to the following: this activity involves inherent risks that can cause property damage, injury, illness, disability, and/or death to participants and/or others; you assume all risk associated with this activity; you are responsible for having the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, clothing, and equipment to safely participate in this activity; you know and will follow the Hiker Responsibility Code described at www.hikesafe.com; the leader(s) of this activity are volunteers; and you release, hold harmless, and indemnify the leader(s) and all members of this group from any and all claims for property damage, injury, illness, disability, and/or death - including those caused by negligence and/or other reasons.
